They have been granted permission to stay together as captain and dragon. Shortly, though, they receive word that they must go immediately to get 3 dragon eggs. This book follows their progress through the wilderness with a guide that seems to be coming and going and likely betraying them. They meet up with some feral dragons who Temeraire talks into coming with them. They lose some, gain the eggs, and leave quickly since they had to steal them because the others were going back on their word. Then, they meet up with Prussians and are forced to aid them in their war with the French. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2010 )

- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Barry Mulvany -- Another good entry in the Temeraire world : So we start off pretty much where we left off in the previous book, with Lawrence and Temeraire ready to depart back to England. A very convenient fire followed by a letter sets the scene with our protagonists having to travel back overland through China, the Middle East, Turkey and then Austria and Germany (Prussia) where they are again swept up in the fighting against Napoleon. Like the previous book the first half seems more like a travelogue until we arrive back in Europe and we get caught up in the Prussian campaigns where we are back to battles and armies. I want to like it, and there are parts of it that I really enjoy, but there are also long sections that are a bit dull. This novel was had a few too many journeys and too little action to be quite as thrilling as the first book, despite having such a novel relationship between the lead characters (human captain and dragon).
